This and Next Week "8/19"

The official Mafia Wars blog finally got around to releasing this week's update of This And Next Week. Or maybe they have changed the posting from Friday to Monday, who knows.

Anyhoo, the Released This Week portion I usually skip over. There's nothing of note there.

Bug Fixes this week does contain a noteworthy entry that I'm anxious to check out.

BUG: The Rivals list was not accurately displaying which players were iced.
FIXED: The Rivals list now more accurately displays which players are alive.

The rivals list was a great idea of Zynga's, but for the longest time we haven't been able to see which of them would be 'live targets', like we can see live or iced opponents on the fight list. You couldn't tell for sure until you actually tapped them with an attack. I haven't been making much use of my rivals list lately, but now that I've read this tidbit, I'm suddenly anxious to call on some old friends :0)

Coming Next Week*
*As far as currently scheduled, but things can change.

Epic Family Boss Fights
Some epic bosses are on their way and it's going to take the collaborative strength of your family to defeat them!

Boost Mastery Event: Arch Enemies
Draw strength from these boosts. Your will enemies quiver with fear.

So the Family boss fight is on the schedule again. Knowing that it's probably going to be just like the Raven and all the other boring boss fights of late, I can't say I'm excited about this one. Although, I guess it would be interesting to have a new set of boss fight combos to figure out.

The Boost Mastery Event, Arch Enemies, sounds like it's going to be very similar to the Freedom Fighters event we saw at the end of June. A gifting event, where the gifts are usable boosts. Fair enough, I didn't mind that one. Provided they keep spacing out the events.

Zynga's also still looking for player feed back on a couple of items. Read HERE for information on the Gold Mystery Bag survey.

It seems they're still pushing their player survey about the new property collection system "Union Hall" to be found on your Mafia Wars homepage. Why does that irk me? Because the bastages haven't bothered finishing the freaking rollout. I STILL don't have it.

new boss fight event: Eliminate Kassina Kunoichi

Thanks Manish Sspillai for this image!

The fans on the Mistyfied page were quicker than me to figure out that another boss fight event has dropped - this one is Eliminate Kassina Kunoichi. Sammy Aux Cux first gave us the heads up, and Manish posted the above image on our fan page. Thanks guys!

I checked under my Operations tab, and sure enough. It looks like we've got another week for this boss fight.

It looks like we'll need to discover new combos for this boss.

Knuckles Punch -> Knife Slash -> Knuckles Punch -> Knife Slash is the first combo I've seen posted.

Knuckles Punch -> Knife Slash -> Crack of the Bat -> Crack of the Bat is the second combo.

And here is a third combo: Crack of the bat, shotgun blast, shotgun blast, shotgun blast.

Personally, I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed with the damned events again. We've got the Put Em On Ice event going on, we know there's an X-men loot drop event coming very soon. Now this just got dropped on us. And we're also expecting a fighting update soon?? Slow the fvk down, Zynga.

That being said, I'm off to fight the boss.

Review of Roughhouse Rafael Boss Fight Event

**republishing for archive purposes, due to blogger's recent mishaps**Zynga has been trying some new types of events lately, probably partially in response to the enormous player outcry over constant gifting events, so I thought I would dissect this latest new boss fight event a bit. I'll try not to editorialize, and just point out what I liked and didn't like about it.

First off, I'm not aware of many bugs in relation to this event, which is an improvement.

There is, though, the major issue of many players such as myself completed the event prior to being able to earn the achievement. For me, Zynga's customer support was very quick and willing to resolve my customer support ticket on the matter; I was pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately though, a lot of players don't realize that they CAN contact customer support about this, so I think Zynga ought to award the achievement to all players who complete the event prior to the quest for the third combo, without them having to ask.

Something that I think definitely made this event bland for me was the lack of interaction with my mafia about it.  Just because we don't want to rely on gifting and Facebook requests constantly doesn't mean we don't like to interact with each other - in fact, that's the best part of the game for most of us.

Comparing this boss fight event with old boss fight events (Beat The Feds, On In San Juan, Rumble In Russia, etc), I like those old boss fight events a lot better in general, minus the host of bugs they had. With those events, we were really helping our mafia when we attacked the bosses they were trying to beat. It was fun to try and out-do other helpers. It was fun to see how long we could whittle down a boss before getting crushed. It was fun to keep track of the progress each of us made in boss fights - not just our own, but our friends' too.

I liked that there was an achievement associated with the event. That's a plus.

While gifting was involved, at least it was only for one of the items. However, collecting the other items was a bit of a pain. Drop rates for the ammos were absolutely terrible. Awful. Atrocious. Icky-yuck.

As far as the combos, I'm kind of "meh" about them. Since there were only 2 combos to be found through "self-discovery", all of the news feed posts about them were the same thing, over and over again. There either needs to be a lot more combos to make those news feed posts worthwhile, or the news feed posts for the combos need to be eliminated since they were redundant and therefore Spam.

Even though the issue of the achievement was resolved for me, I still don't get to take part in the "quest" for the third combo, so I can't review that although I hear it's coming soon. Which kind of sucks, but it was my decision to go ahead and finish the event.

All in all? Not a bad event, but not my favorite.

Roughhouse Rafael 411

The info is on Zynga's site now for this event, click here to read it for yourself.

  • As with most events and features, this was said to be on a slow rollout, although my guess is that almost everyone should have it by now since this came out late last night.
  • Ends on 5/18, so we have a week.
  • The boss will regenerate health every 8 hours, or if you run away from the fight.
  • No stamina is used, instead we must collect "ammo" (the new boss fight consumables)

The items that can be collected are:

  • Shotgun Blast -> 25-35 damage.  This consumable is a free gift and can be found in feeds.
  • Knife Slash -> 5-15 damage.  This consumable may be found by completing Jobs.
  • Knuckle Punch -> 7-13 damage.  This consumable is may be found when Fighting.
  • Crack of the Bat -> 9-11 damage.  You have a chance at finding this consumable when Robbing.

  • There are three combos, two if which are already known. One Combo will also be found by completing a Quest Event, which will begin after the Boss fight begins and will continue for the duration of the event.
  • Jobbing, fighting, and robbing consumables are limited to collecting 50 a day. The limit is 40 a day for the giftable consumable.
  • Once you've reached the limit, consumables received as free gifts will open as Mystery Bags.
  • Three mastery levels to this boss; bronze, silver, and gold.
  • Once fully mastered, you will be able to continue beating the boss through the end of the event. The information doesn't say, but I wouldn't be expecting multiple mastery items from that.
  • The timer resets each time you beat the boss.

boss fight on slow rollout, combos hit the feeds

The new boss fights are on a slow rollout, and we're starting to see those combos hit the news feed. FC Mike Shay shared an image from his game, so we know that it can be found under the Operations tab. Thanks Mike!

We should get a module on our homepage in Mafia Wars once the feature is available to us.

Mike also found an achievement for this event, called Rafael Boss' Weak, which is earned by finding all ammo combos. So I guess this means there are only 3 combos? That sorta sucks.

Zynga wasn't kidding when they said we'd be able to share combos in the news feed, because there's going to be an actual post for it. You'll need to click the posts from your news feed, which will redirect you to the game and tell you what the combo was. So far I've only seen this one twice.
