Vendredi noir... quel desastre! 11/23

Black Friday, what a disaster!

In less than 12 hours, Zynga, Facebook and Mafia Wars have been working hard to alienate their own, very loyal, customers, again.

Several members of my Mafia Wars Family and other players have been so excited about the %60 Off Reward Points Black Friday Sale that they either a) Ran right out and bought Zynga Game cards at a local retailer or b) purchased on line Reward points, only to discover that:
They were now Facebook credits, and that Zynga or Mafia Wars was somehow unable to recognize their purchases.  There have been many exchanges between these players and Customer Service. As far as I can tell so far, there is still no resolution.

How to kill a game...and other stuff :P

Many of you know that Facebook went public last week, and given how over valued the company was, it is no surprise that the stock did not do well during its first couple days on the market.  But more interesting to me, and perhaps many of you is that another company suffered a massive decline in stock value the day of Facebook's IPO:  Zynga.  Forbes has an excellent article about all this1, and I suggest you read it (I will provide a link at the end of this blog entry).  But I do wish to quote directly the last paragraph of the Forbes article:

"As for Zynga, now that they’ve begun to shift focus toward actually original titles, maybe they’ll turn a new leaf. Maybe, as Paul Tassi writes, they’ve realized that their terrible reputation has caught up with them. If that’s the case, it’s possible that the company will continue to grow. If not, I’d be hesitant to place too many eggs in your Zynga basket, with or without the Facebook IPO shaking things up."

You know what I think?  I think Zynga will never change.  I think that their reputation will only get worse, at least within the Mafia Wars community.  At this point it will take a corporate miracle to save this game.  All Mafia Wars is now to Zynga is a dying cash cow.   They have demonstrated having little to zero interest in what we as players actually want, and they feed into the addiction of the spenders like me.  They are not going to bring trading back.  They have not made any more loot giftable.  The number of events has steadily increased, not decreased. They increase the number of marketplace promotions and crate sales, knowing that idiots like myself, who at this point can hardly help themselves/myself, will spend hundreds of dollars buying crates.  We now have this VIP Subscription, which even many of the stingier players are coughing up $24.95 a month for.   And another m***** f******* limited time property is on the way.

What used to be one of the most incredible online gaming phenomena has now become a pitiful and shameless example of corporate greed.  And it is utterly SHAMELESS.  A game that millions upon millions of people used to play now has a mere three to four hundred thousand addicts remaining2 -  and they are quitting everyday by the handfuls.

A long time mafia member of mine, who often shares, and possibly exceeds,  my cynical attitude towards Zynga and Mafia Wars, recently shared with me a list of 6 easy steps to kill a game:
     1.) Spam Wars
2.) Bloat the game and run all but [the] supercomputuer owners away
3.) Micromanage the game playing experience
4.) Punish players for every mistake you make
5.) Concentrate on making money instead of fixing game problems
     ‎6.) Keep changing the goalposts

I could not have said it better myself - {ℳ} ßrµ†µ§ =Ʀ²Ƒ=

Temporary Issue with Official Links Posted on the Mafia Wars Facebook Fan Page

Many of us have noticed issues when doing.... well almost everything on Facebook. Facebook is the problem this time, not the game, not the links you're clicking on. This seemed to become a big problem last night, and apparently even Zynga's zyn.ga links have been giving people errors when they try to click on them. The Mafia Wars blog posted this last night:

Mobsters,

You may have noticed that we recently changed the official Mafia Wars Facebook fan page links to begin with "http://fun.zynga.com/". You can trust links of this form as legitimate even though a recent error has temporarily caused them to be misidentified as abusive when clicking on those posted on the fan page. All links of this form and the older form (http://zyn.ga/) remain safe to use and will function as intended if you copy them into your browser's address bar. Posting to the fan page will resume once the issue has been resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

- The Mafia Wars Team

PS: In case you missed it posted on the official Mafia Wars Facebook fan page earlier, here's the link to claim today's FREE health point: http://fun.zynga.com/13A

Facebook News Feeds

There seems to be a good news for players. Facebook book is probably offering a little flexibility (read control) in the way we see our news feeds. I am not sure when it will rolled out to all of us. My account currently doesn't have it.
Here is the screenshot:

Before we had to filter our news feeds by bookmarking.

Zynga: More Social. More, more, more.

We just wrapped up Zynga Unleashed, a news event where we announced brand spankin’ new play – including a gaggle of new social games including our next “Ville”, and our very own new play service, code named, “Project Z.”

Consider this blog post your one-stop-shop for all things Unleashed. We’re talking games, platforms, and a whole new way to play.

“Project Z”
We’re lucky to have fantastic social platforms as partners and we continue to focus on bringing more games to mobile devices and to players all over the world. What we’ve found from talking to our players is that they want to play online with friends who love the same games, and they want to connect with others who are playing at that very moment. We call that the promise of instant social, and today we’re taking a big step towards it with the announcement of “Project Z,” a new social games service from Zynga, enabled by Facebook Connect.

There will be a lot more information to come as we work towards the launch of Project Z, but beginning today, players can reserve their gamer identity tags, called zTags, by visiting http://www.Zynga.com. You’ll own your zTag and it will travel with you between games on the Project Z service. Project Z is coming to a browser near you very soon. Get ready.
Games for Everyone, Everywhere
That’s our goal, and today we announced new games across a number of platforms. You want details? We’ve got details.

CastleVille
Built by one of our talented studios in the Lone Star State, Zynga Dallas, CastleVille is our latest addition to the “Ville” franchise. Enter a rich medieval world with an engaging storyline, just a touch of fantasy and memorable and playful characters. CastleVille is the most beautiful game we’ve ever made, and that’s evident in the scenery, the animation, and the playful and lively characters that make this game sing.
The characters you meet and the decisions you make in CastleVille affect the mysterious locations you discover, and the rare items you reveal. Like a beautiful snow flake or an artisanal brick oven pizza, no two games are the same.

And one last thing that makes CastleVille special—the music. We’re bringing players an original orchestral soundtrack, recorded in Seattle with a 75-piece orchestra and full choir. It’s the first time this has ever been done in a social game, and not to get all sappy on you, but the music gives us chills.

We can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on, but you’ll have to wait to play. Check out the game’s Facebook page for updates on when you can build the castle and kingdom of your dreams.

Zynga Casino’s Zynga Bingo
Z-Y-N-G-A, Z-Y-N-G-A, Z-Y-N-G-A, and social was its name-O. Yeah… thanks for humoring us there. But we’re not messing around with Zynga Bingo, which along with Zynga Poker, the largest social poker game in the world, will now makeup the newly created Zynga Casino franchise. You’ve played bingo before right? This was a social game before people actually used the word social. We’re talking friends, fun, and the indescribable but oh so awesome feeling you get when you hit it, before anyone else, and you’re the winner. BINGO!!! So break out your digital daubers, choose from one of many themed bingo rooms (Pirates Paradise! Vegas Lights!), and grab your friends. You’re going to have some serious fun with Zynga Bingo.

And because they’ll both be part of Zynga Casino, your chips will move with you from Zynga Poker to Zynga Bingo. We’re also going to make it easy for you to find your friends while they’re playing, no matter which “table” they’re sitting at in either one of the games. Zynga Poker is available on Zynga Casino today, and keep your eyes peeled for Zynga Bingo. Coming soon!

Hidden Chronicles
This is a new genre for us, but one that’s grounded in the very essence of game play. Did you read Highlights growing up? Remember Memory? Concentration? Consider this the grown up but still fun, digital version. Hidden Chronicles combines memory and skill and wraps it in a beautiful and fun social game. Seriously – you could just load up a game screen and stare at it. We have.

Hidden Chronicles is about mystery, discovery, and a little friendly competition. Like snowboarding or making scrambled eggs, it’s easy to learn but hard to master. As you move through boards discovering thousands of hidden items, you’ll also unlock the story of Ramsey Manor, your home base in Hidden Chronicles. You’ll meet and interact with unique caretakers there, and have the ability to build, decorate and customize the Manor.

And what, you ask, makes this game social? Well, you can play with your friends of course. Challenge them to particular scenes and compare scores, cooperate to build out your personal estates, and if you’re feeling generous, hide gifts on your friends’ game boards. Be on the lookout for Hidden Chronicles.

DreamZoo
Have you ever held a rainbow-colored giraffe in the palm of your hand? Yes? Was this while you were at Burning Man? Well, for those who haven’t, rejoice! Dream Zoo is here. Coming soon to the Apple App Store in multiple languages, Dream Zoo is our first zoo themed game that lets players collect some of the world’s most exotic animals.

Players can connect with friends around the world and help one another care and feed for their digital wild kingdoms. To be clear, we’re serious about mobile, and zoos. Stay tuned, we’re releasing Dream Zoo into the wild soon.

Mafia Wars 2
Maybe you saw the news yesterday on our first true sequel from the wrong side of the tracks? This is a game that kicks ass and takes names and a single platform is just not enough turf for this big gun. So today, we announced that Mafia Wars 2 is now available on both Facebook and Google+ games. Play Mafia Wars today!
Twitter:@MafiaWars2
Facebook Mobile
Facebook announced the launch of its mobile apps and mobile site, and today we’re announcing three HTML5 games will be coming to Facebook’s mobile apps site soon: Zynga Poker Mobile Web, Words With Friends HTML5 and Farmville Express.

Developed using HTML5 technology, these games slice, they dice, they even julienne! Sorry, got a little carried away there. But they will deliver faster load times, smoother game-play, and near-immediate responses to player actions all within the comfort of your own mobile browser. Zynga Poker Mobile Web, Words With Friends HTML5 and Farmville Express are the first large-scale games to be built using HTML5.

So that’s it, your full Zynga Unleashed rundown. Thanks for playing with us, today and always. We hope you love playing these new games as much as we enjoyed making them. As Mark Pincus would say: Let’s Play!

Hide New Facebook ticker stream on applications

Here's a Greasemonkey script for hiding the Facebook activity bar:
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/110545

Thanks Daniel F. for sharing. As I don't have the activity bar yet, I was unable to test it, but Daniel told me that he did install it to make sure it works. Let me know if you have additional feedback :0)

Hide FB Activity Bar 0.0.1

For Chrome users who get the Facebook activity bar when playing games, here is an extension that is supposed to kill the activity bar. I do not have this activity bar and I have not tested this extension.

Facebook gave me the activity bar briefly a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't have any problems with it, but I know a lot of people don't like it. Some say it slows their game down (I didn't notice this), and many others don't like the lack of "privacy".

Anyhoo, if you have feedback to share regarding this extension, please do so. It's started floating around some Skype chat rooms, and people say it works :)

Thanks Peta.

Alex is working on an addition to the UnlockedMW toolbar to handle the game bar as well, FYI.

Clickable Gift Links in FB Notes (again)

Due to recent changes in Facebook Notes where http links are no longer clickable by default and just appear as regular text. This tip is for all those who are posting their gift links in Note and using Link-a-Nator (v2.12 beta) to generate those links.

Normally, one would copy+paste the links from the second results window, labeled TinyURL Links. Just change to copy+paste from the last results window, labeled Notes Links instead. By making this small change your gift links in a Facebook Note will be clickable once again. This is because the Facebook Note still honours the <a href> html element tag.

You can even use the following template to make any http link clickable in the main body of the FB Note.

#14 - Adding friends for events gets us 'Pinked'!

Next up in response to the 16 points addressed in the recent Zynga Q&A blog, we look at the concern about adding new people for event in MW.

14. Some Mafia Wars events require that I add hundreds of friends so quickly that I risk getting pinked/banned by Facebook! This is ridiculous!

We removed the biggest issues with this and have been working with Facebook to improve player communications with each other. To our knowledge, this is becoming less and less of an issue.

Please share your feedback regarding Being Pinked/Banned By Facebook.

It's fair to say this most directly relates to the recent "Crack the Safe" event where we had to add 5 new people to our Mafia in order to receive a number of decent loot items. It also used to be a feature of some of the limited time missions where you had to add new crew in order to receive more consumables per day for the duration of the mission.

Although Facebook is of course the biggest single platform for social gaming, and many games actively encourage the addition of new people by design (I mean, who has 500 real friends who play Mafia Wars?), it is technically against TOS to add people you don't actually know:

Unwanted contact: Our systems detect when friend requests you send to others are being ignored at a high rate and volume. Using Facebook to contact many people you don't know is not allowed because it may make them feel threatened, harassed, or unsafe.

As is apparent from their quote addressing the point, I think Zynga already know this is an issue, as they pulled Crack the Safe following feedback from people regarding the amount of "pink-slipping" that was going on, and realised that it's not really a great idea to encourage such intense friend adding linked to an event. Nor have we seen the "crew" function in one of the limited time missions for a while. All in all, I think Zynga have learnt their lesson on this one. Until next time of course :P

Secret Drop gift link Issue with Link-a-Nator

So there is a recurring issue after 3 days with Secret Drops shortened links when generated using Spockholm's Link-a-Nator. Anyone who is claiming them will be getting Blue Mystery Bags instead of the expected Secret Drop.

As you can see from the screenshot above, from the Link-a-Nator, what should be a Secret Drop is listed as a Blue Mystery Bag in the raw link form. In other words it is not matching and therefore one would get a Blue Mystery Bag.

Pulling the raw link from Gift ID #400 manually, you can see from the screenshot below that this link when shortened will produce a true Secret Drop when clicked.

So until Spockholm can get a fix on this, please be aware that when you are trying to get your daily 5 Secret Drops may get you a Blue Mystery Bag instead (if the link producer used Link-a-Nator) which will go against your daily 200 gift limit. On the bright side, those that know how to manually extract a link or are using MWADDOn will not have this issue and their shorten Secret Drop links will be valid.

WANTED: ability to remove myself from operations!

Last month, FC Rebecca Read opened this thread on Getsatisfaction.com, the gist of which is, we want a way to remove ourselves from operations.

Rinzler said that it was a fairly common suggestion, and he was forwarding it to the team. I'm starting to think it's about time the team listens, what do you think?

It's really a pain in the a$s when you've got stamina and energy to blow on operations, but then you get this message: "Can only help in 10 operations at a time."

Then you go look to collect and close some of the ops you're already in on, and get a pageful of stalled operations like this where some a$shole never finished the job :0) Or never even started it.

At that point, it would be nice if you could simply excuse yourself from operations of your choosing. After all, you spent the energy and stamina to begin with, shouldn't it be your choice if you want to waste it and get out of that operation to find more active ops?

Mafia Wars Live TODAY

There may be an additional reason to tune in to Mafia Wars Live, scheduled for 3:30 Pacific time in a little under 3 hours from now. I heard there might be discussion regarding the fighting changes that Zynga has heavily hinted at a few times over the past few weeks.

Nate and Cole will be telling us about new features "coming soon" - as per the Mafia Wars blog.

If you want the guys to answer a question that you have, go to this forum thread to post it, and then tune in right here today at 3:30PM Pacific time. I'll see you there!

40% off RPs right now

It's worth noting for some that you may be able to find a 40% off sale on reward points. When I'm able, 40% off sales will get me to make a purchase. I got some a few days ago, but I went ahead and got a few more today since I haven't seen the 40% off offered much lately.

Zynga wants you to take a quick survey. Nothing exciting there.

ANY TIME YOU MAKE A PURCHASE FOR A FACEBOOK GAME:
Make sure you go through your account settings on Facebook and remove your payment information!!

Facebook doesn't tell you this upfront, but any time you make a game purchase on Facebook, your payment information is stored. This is information all those spammers and scammers would kill for. Protect yourself and don't click on stupid stuff, and always remove your payment info from Facebook.

Under Account Settings, go to Credits Balance, then Payment Methods, and select "Manage". At the bottom of the next page, you will see any stored payment information, as well as the option to remove it.

Be smart.

inactive Facebook search links

image posted by Bill Breister
I'm not sure when this changed, but I just noticed it earlier today. When searching for specific free gifts or links in our news feed, any associated links are no longer clickable. Not a huge deal, per se, but it's annoying because if you want to claim the item, you now have to copy and paste the link.

When viewing the news feed normally, any links will be clickable.

But if you search Facebook looking for a certain item, the links aren't clickable.

:(

Thanks Bill Breister for pointing this out :)
