There hasn't been a lot of feedback on the Getsatisfaction thread about this one, but I can't help but think that it's something that probably bothers a LOT of us. Almost every single time we enter the game, we either have to bypass the Free Gifts screen or close the Message Center pop-up, or both. And there are many more examples. Here is Zynga's #5 on the Q&A list for the players:

Let's take a look at some of the places that we run into pop-ups enticing us to send free gifts. You get the one above just for entering the game via your bookmarks.
As soon as you Skip past the Free Gifts screen, you still can't get to playing Mafia Wars, because you get this Message Center pop-up that you've got to close first.
